Please pass this on.
I know alot of people on this community have attended Dragon*Con every year, if not atleast once in their lives. If you have, you probably have seen, talked to, passed by, laughed with, or have done something with Melissa Kern. Especially if you're strong in the Lord of the Rings community, Harry Potter community or even anime.

Mel has helped out and headed up the Young Adult Lit track at DCon, as well as the Tolkien tracks. She has worked security at Anime Weekend Atlanta and various other Sci-Fi/Fantasy events around Atlanta including Mythic Journeys.

First and foremost, Mel is one of my closest friends and in December she was diagnosed with ALS, also know as Lou Gerrigs disease. Unfortunitely the form of the disease she has is rapid and 9 times out of 10, fatal. Though everyone is hoping for some sort of turnaround, or maybe a slower progression of the disease, (see Stephen Hawkin).

What I bring to you today is a plea to sign an online petition that her husband has started to try and make a dream of hers come true.

Please read further:

As most of you know, my wife Melissa "Fiver" Kern has been diagnosed with ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. In September, she marched with fellow Lord of the Rings fans in the annual DragonCon parade, but six months later, she needs help walking, dressing and using stairs.

I wanted to do something for Melissa, to show her the impact that she's had on people, in the Lord of the Rings communities and beyond. To that end, I have put together a petition online. I call it "Project FIVER" (after her name on the community websites), and it is a petition to have New Line cast her as a Hobbit extra in THE HOBBIT. We don't know the course her disease will take, so she worries that she won't be around to see the movies in theaters, so this was the next best thing.

If you wouldn't mind, please sign the petition. Feel free to share the link with others, but PLEASE keep this from Melissa for the time being! I want to reveal it to her when the time is right. (Thus the locked post)

Thanks to each of you for being a good friend to her.

Request: DragonCon 2007 Pirate Parade Banner
Hello everyone. I was wondering if anyone was planning on bringing a flag or banner for the Piratical Portion of the Parade. Last year, we used this one:

I'm not sure who owned it, but any help would be great. Flags on poles or flags witout poles attached together would be just fine as well!

Anyone wanting to contact me about flags/banners or marching in the Pirate Parade can do so at:

dragonconpirates (at) yahoo dot com.

Thanks in advance!

will's fancy dress at the end of COTB
hi, i am going to be joining the society for creative anachronism soon, and i will be needing an appropriate period outfit to wear. i'm in love with will's cavalier outfit from the end of pirates of the caribbean: curse of the black pearl; but obviously it's not going to have been worn during the time frame the sca uses.

i was wondering if any of you know much about that outfit, and if you could tell me the name of the shirt or vest, and when they might have been worn; i believe the vest is a sea jerkin, which could probably vastly pre-date the rest of his getup.

anyways, any information you can give me about this would be greatly appreciated; as well as any sites that sell recreations of parts of this costume.

i'd really like to be a pirate at the sca, but i just don't think the time lines up good.

thanks for any assistance you can offer me.

How can I fake my dreads?
Last year for the DMC midnight showing, I went with a group of friends dressed as pirates. Only one of us took it really seriously, and her costume, while generic, was awesome. She's pretty handy with a sewing machine, so we've decided to make costumes for the next midnight showing in May. Cheap costumes, but awesome cheap costumes. :D

My Question, and a Picture from last year.Collapse )

NEW Pirate Elizabeth [PotC] costume for sale...
To those intrigued,

I am looking to sell a Pirate Elizabeth [Pirates of the Carribbean: Dead Man's Chest] costume that I've been constructing over the past few months. The costume is unworn and, at this point in time, not quite finished. I had been planning to finish and wear the costume to the Maryland Renaissance Festival last weekend, but life got in the way and prevented me from pulling it together in time. The garments are very well constructed [please feel free to look through my cosplay.com gallery to see samples of my previous work, if curious] and the fabrics were carefully chosen, of period weave, and will be accurately weathered. Included would be the shirt, vest, jacket, trousers, and boots. Everything has been made to fit a 36" bust, 28" waist, and 38" hips, but there are a few inches of leeway on all garments, especially the waistband of the pants. The boots, which are authentic to the style Elizabeth wears in the movie, are a size 7, but are quite roomy on me, so I'd estimate they'd fit up to a size 8 or possibly even an 8.5. As I said, everything is unworn and in pristine condition. The only part of the costume not included is the hat, because, well, I like mine so I'm keeping it, dammit. XP The materials for this costume came to almost $60 and the boots were $40. I am selling the costume for best offer, but please know that I am looking for at least $100 to cover the cost of construction.

Pictures of the unfinished costume...Collapse )

This is a VERY well-made costume, cleanly constructed, and something which I fully anticipated competing with, myself. You will be getting a GOOD product, and I can have the costume finished and ready to ship within two weeks. You would have it before Halloween! I have already had several offers for this costume, but will not be making a decision on who to sell to for at least a week, so offers are very much appreciated and still being accepted. Please email me, hunt me down on AIM [lolita moi], or drop me a PM via cosplay.com if interested, and thanks for reading! <333
